Anyone know if Mahler's 8th will be released by Tilson Thomas and The Sanfrancisco Symphony?

These have been such great recordings. I want the 8th.

Two nights ago our local NPR featured SFS program, Mahler’s Das Lied was the featured performance, the program host did mention that the performance was being recorded.
Very well done, Thomas Hampson’s voice makes this a must have recording.

And yes, back to the topic, when will the M8 be available?

Later this year according to Gramophone with bits of 10 tacked on. They think August / September-ish

Does anyone know if the SFO plans to perform/record any performing version of the entire Symphoney #10? That would be something I would be very interested in getting.

Also, do we know if the SFO plans to continue recording in SACD after the cycle is completed?

I am 99.9% sure that MTT won't be recording the full 10th - I understand he does not believe in it as a fully realized composition by Mahler. (As an aside, while the Adagio of the 10th is a great piece of music, to me it sounds incomplete and unresolved, like playing one of the movements of another Mahler symphony without the remainder of the work).

I haven't heard anything about further recordings in SACD.

BTW, I sent an inquiry to the SFS to see if this is an SACD like all of the other releases have been. I am relatively certain it will be, but I just wanted to check.

Conductors frequently say this, and I think it's really silly.

The Cooke version is very well done in the respect that it tries to fill in just enough holes so that the piece can be performed, and that it is more Mahler than Cooke (hence the reason Cooke always called it a "Performing Version" rather than "completed").

In the liner notes to Gielen's recent recording, he notes that he used to avoid performing versions of the 10th, but looked at the Cooke version, and realized that Cooke is just trying to give listeners an impression of where Mahler was going with the 10th, and there is a lot of good music in there that shouldn't be ignored. It should be listened to as a work in progress. Gielen also helps it sound more Mahleresque by playing up the muted and stopped brass.

The much more complete orchestrations of the 10th, though, I find to be extremely overdone.

I hope people would overcome any misgivings about the performing version of the 10th. The flute solo in the 5th mov't is one of the most serenely-beautiful melodies I've ever heard. Levine does the whole thing best; a very early but well-recorded Soundstream digital recording from (gasp) '79 in a church acoustic.
