Discussion: Shostakovich: Hamlet - Yablonsky

This is a great recording and doesn't sound like a normal Naxos recording. It does still have a slightly cool sound but not really cold like other Naxos SACDs. However it is one of the most exciting recordings I've heard and the percussion has impact like one usually only hears live. Maximum goosebumps abound. This is actually a repurchase, I originally rejected it because of the lack of warmth (which is a problem) but as I noted when I sold it, it was the best sounding Naxos I've purchased. The film music from Hamlet is my favorite work by Shostakovich and I missed it. Berkshire Record Outlet had it on sale for $4.99 so I decided to try it again, knowing I could still resale it and not lose anything. The reason for posting this is JPC now also has it on sale for EUR 6,99.

This was recorded using Pyramix by Merging Technologies. I searched their website and discovered that Pyramix can record any resolution of PCM up to 192kHz, native DSD and DXD. This does not sound as warm as DSD recordings I have so I am guessing perhaps high resolution PCM? The most important thing is it sounds very un-Naxos like.

I am currently working on an article of new SACD releases for PFO and I was comparing this to the Hamlet on the PentaTone Shostakovich: Symphony No. 15, Hamlet - Pletnev . These are two totally different Hamlet's the Hamlet on the PentaTone is incidental music to the play written in 1931 (Op. 32) and the Naxos is Music for the 1964 Film (Op. 116/116a). I don't really like the earlier music from the 1931 play but the 1964 film I love. I recommend this SACD especially for the cheap price and the fantastic music.

Thanks, Teresa. Not sure how I missed this. Have just ordered myself a copy.

That's IMPOSSIBLE! Only Telarc knows how to get the low end right.

Thanks Teresa, I've had this disc forever, but needed a reminder to listen to it. The film was my introduction to Shostakovich in 1965, and I can still see, in my mind's eye, Hamlet running around Elsinor... with the body of Polonius, looking for a place to stow it? Gotta see the movie again.
