I notice that Pentatone sometimes uses Meitner equipment, sometimes dCS. Some people swear by dCS; some people (e.g. Harry Pearson) swear at it.

How does Pentatone decide what equipment to use for a particular project?

Dear Dean,

It is Polyhymnia International our studio who takes these decisions. I spoke with them this morning and they will comment.

Since the beginning of the SA-CD development, we have been using several types of AD and DA convertors that were capable of DSD conversion. The first Philips prototype was a real eye-opener (and ear). It showed clearly then that it out performed the DCS PCM convertors we were using at the time. These Philips convertors were used in the first full hybrid SA-CD made for the 1999 Berlin IFA show. Editing was first done off-line on a sonic system using downconverted PCM files and then the edit list was used by the Philips engineers to create the DSD editing at very non real time. The results were great and it made us want to record in DSD very much.

When Sony introduced Sonoma and Merging the DSD version of Pyramix we had 2 workstations to record DSD for our SA-CD production work. Sony provided the pro audio world with Meitner and Philips made DCS based recording sytems available.

At the recording sessions of the Jerry Goldsmith film music medley disc we had the opportunity to listen to the 3 types of convertors. There were tiny differences, but the quality of the Meitner set and the DCS set is so high that we do not feel the need to chose and use both on our projects.

In Russia we have permanently based one Polyhymnia recording set with Meitner, so all the recordings from there will be made with that. I do not think it is possible to identify, without knowing, which of our recordings is made with Meitner or DCS, it could be a nice game...............

Thank you for your post. I have listened to several Pentatone SACDs, some done with Meitner, some with dCS. They have all sounded wonderful to me. Harry Pearson just must be wrong. Digital music finally makes musical sense. I don't have to watch TV anymore...
