Does anyone have inside information on the recording technology used here for each of the two recording sessions? All it says is "24-bit technology was used". I know there's lots of variables but the earlier session (tracks 4-6) sounds so different.

I have this SACD recording and agree with your comments, noting that Concerto #5 in F was recorded between 14 and 16 May, 2000, while Concerti #3, #6 and #7 were all recorded 12 and 13 May, 2001. With almost exactly a year separating the two recordings, even using the same venue, there could be any number of reasons for the diffreent sound quality -- different microphones and/or other equipment used, slightly different positioning, weather conditions etc. According to the booklet, all the recordings are 24-bit PCM; i.e. no direct DSD, as you are already aware.

Perhaps someone at Sony might be able to throw some light on it.

It's a very nice disc, nonetheless, and I wonder whether volume I will come out on SACD at some stage. I also have both Perahia's Goldberg and his most recent Bach disc (with Brandenburg #5) on SACD and I find them both superb too.
