Hi,

I would like to know what would be your list of best piano concerto ever made, including the performance?

Mine would be
Piano Concerto No. 5 “Emperor” – Beethoven
Piano Concerto No.21 – Mozart

Agree - Beethoven 5. Stephen Kovacevich recording with Colin Davis from the 60s on Philips. Shame it wasn't a quad recording....

Mine is still Tchaikovsky's First, even though a few members here think hearing it once is once too often. My favorite performance - by a long shot - is that by Yevgeny Sudbin along with the Sao Paulo Symphony Orcestra conducted by John Neschling on BIS. I have at least four other recordings of the piece, most of which are quite good, but Sudbin's rendition is simply outstanding.

Are we talking SACD here?

Using modern instruments, Zacharias' Mozart series is the one to beat: Mozart: Piano Concertos Vol. 5 - Christian Zacharias

His Schumann: Piano Concerto - Zacharias is a little controversial, but has some of the best multichannel sound I have heard.

My favorite piano concerto is Brahms 2, but I am still waiting for a muscular, granitic performance like Emil Gilels' to appear on SACD in modern digital sound.

I prefer the term favorite piano concerto, my favorites are
Ravel: Piano Concerto in G
Gershwin: Concerto in F
Grieg: Piano Concerto in A Minor
Prokofieff: Piano Concerto No. 3 in C Major

Mozart 25th, Beethoven 4th, Brahms 2nd

Mozart 25 and Beethoven 4 even use the same 4-note rhythmic motive:
eighth-eighth-eighth-quarter

(same as Beethoven 5th symphony)

I would add the the Langgaard Symphony No. 3 (which is really a piano concerto) is currently riding the top 5 for me right now.

Today's choice would be the Ravel (BOTH hands) with Martha Argerich and Claudio Abbado conducting the LSO (1988 I believe).

Yuck! What a piece of junk. Check out Schumann's and Grieg's piano concertos first, for God's sake. This is one of Langgaard's worst "symphonies".

You're certainly entitled to your opinion - as I am. I happen to be a pianist who plays a number of the pieces mentioned. After playing and hearing enough performances of both the Grieg and Schumann, I'd like to see the public exposed to other pieces.
