He isn't the first with that kind of hairstyle: remember Nigel Kennedy.

Recording of the Month at MusicWeb.

And a terrific disc it is. I've been trying to find the time to write a review but the press of work and digging out from our continual snow storms has defeated me. Had I gotten around to it the results would have been *****/*****.

It is a wonderful performance, very lively and light in the best sense. My only reservation is the intonation of the solo violin. It is not always perfect. I am quite used to Perlman and Mutter (when she was on her teens, conducted by Karajan), but in spite of this caveat I still enjoy the performance very much. Mutter under Karajan is maybe too big, a bit heavy, old fashioned, compared with this new BIS release. Perlman with Vienna PH under Levine is probably lighter. But do try this performance as it is quite fresh and light and expertly recorded.

The Sinfonia Concertante is equally good, but I must admit I am very fond of an Orpheus Chamber Orchestra recording on DG that still sounds PERFECT to me, both technically and artistically, in spite of being an old, DDD, compact disc!

Still, this new BIS SACD provided some new insights on already known works and lots of pleasure to me.
Enjoy the music!

Juan mentioned Mutter/Karajan. I've got them on a DG RBCD and I agree with what he said about it. However, compared with Mutter/Karajan these players sound like they're in a hurry to get the session over with. I'll give both another listen...

Yes, Greg, I suggest you give it another try. I, too, had the same feeling when I listened to this SACD for the first time. I even had a sensation of strangeness regarding the music. But after a couple of complete listenings, the music began to dance. It is really fresh! I will be looking forward to your feedback.
Anne-Sohie Mutter, well, her sound is unique and nobody is trying to surpass her. But this Tognetti is a completely different animal. And a valuable one, IMO!
Enjoy the music.

Comparisons between these performances and well regarded earlier recordings by the likes of Mutter/Karajan are simply not very helpful. Played at A=430 on gut strings and period winds with all that implies regarding tempi, articulation, expression, and the native sound of the instruments, there's simply no way Tognetti's interpretations could sound anything like Mutter's. As Juan suggests, these performances really dance. Unless you're fundamentally allergic to period instruments and performance practice my advice is to try 'em, I bet you'll like 'em.
