Discussion: Lutoslawski: Orchestral Works - Gardner (Muzyka Polska I)

I see that 3 out of 3 recommend this disc. Has anyone been able to listen and make a meaningful comparison with other recordings - on SACD (Maksymiuk and Jarvi for the Concerto for Orchestra) and RBCD? How does the new Chandos recording compare?

Thanks for any comments.

I compared it briefly to an older Chandos RBCD with Tortellier and the BBC Phil using the Concerto for Orchestra (the only common work). The new one has a warmer, richer tone--weightier strings. The older has a bit more tension in the playing--the string players dig in just a bit more. When the full orchestra cuts loose, though, the strings and brass sound gorgeous--very rich and full. Inner wind detail is good without obvious spotlighting. Overall, the new one is very satisfactory.

Thank you! That helps (I happen to own the Tortelier recording of the Concerto on Chandos as well).
