Very much enjoyed Arthur's "play-by-play" review of this astonishing concerto, the #2. My benchmark is Frager's on RCA, (an early Decca recording of stunning weight and texture. As Arthur points out, it looks like Ashkenazy digs deeper and achieves a similar deliciously raw sound, so captivating at the beginning of 3rd mov't, and some of the motor-rhythms of the 5th mov't--that bass trombone, tuba... the "dirty" string basses and bass drum! Anyone else here this particular recording and performance *and* the Frager?

What has amazed me is the widespread availability of this disc from Octavia. My discs of the Prokofiev PCs were imported from Japan along with the two symphonies recorded at much the same time.

All three discs are excellent and it is pleasing that they are now available to a wider appreciative public. Let's hope this trend continues.

Is it tape edit or a finger slip at about 9'41" in the first movement of the second concerto?

This probably only bothers me,
but the colourful campanelli (glock) parts in mvts 1&3
of concerto #1, marked forte, are barely audible here as
on a number of other recordings.
The RB-CD with Kissin on DG is much better on this account.

Interesting, Hurwitz gave it blah ratings, I believe. For me, I'm looking out for a 2nd to "beat" Frager's, which astonishingly has never made it to CD. I hope Acoustic Sounds will pick it up, along with all the other British Decca's.

Don't you own the Classic Records reissue of the Frager? I would think it sounds wonderful on your Scout - I know it does on my Garrard. Of course, that won't deter me from purchasing another worthy performance on SACD as well.

If you only knew how dumb I've been. I've sold it all to move on ultimately to downloads. With the marantz and sacds during interim. For all their foibles LP s were ultimate.

I have about 2500 of them including Classic Records reissues and one original shaded dog. I have a relatively fine record playback front end.

I really disagree with you - see my post on the "Multichannel Audio in a small room" thread

No form of stereo comes anywhere nearly as close to transporting me to the concert hall as my best mch recordings.
