What are your favorite PentaTone DSD recordings?

Some of us are new enough (such as threeandot) to benefit from a listing of favorites. Probably useful to state reasons

Mine are:
1) Julia Fischer's Bach album - reasons: superior multi-channel sound capturing the solo violin in an acoustic space and the performances are the most beautiful I ever heard including 2 live recitals by Hilary Hahn and boy, let me tell you something - thats saying a hell of a lot!

2) Julia Fischer's Russian Violin concertos Prokofiev/Katcheturian/Glazunov all superbly performed and recorded.

3) Jurowski's Tchaikovsky Suite #3 Unusually fine sound and excellent interpretation and execution.

4) Kreizburg's Strauss waltzes If the above has great sound, I think this one is even better. The interpretations in my mind leave little to ask for although I know some of us did ask.

5) Julia Fischer's Mozart concertos #3 and #4. Again superb sound and execution. The cadenzas by Kreizburg and Fischer lend even more interest beyond the standard performance.

6) The Paavo Jarvi Stravinsky disc Soldier's Tale is really just amazing sound wise and there is nothing I can criticize about the interpretation. Maybe I would have liked the complete thing with actors speaking for the dialogs between the soldier, the devil and the maid. Still this is a demo disc.

To conclude there are none I have heard that are in anyway any kind of let down. Just because I haven't listed it here doesn't mean it isn't a great disc but after all I said favorites! What are yours?

I found the following on the Channel Classics forum - obviously misplaced!

I would very much like to hear Bruckner's fourth symphony on SACD, maybe conducted by Kreizberg as a follow up for his quite illuminating seventh. At the moment no SACD recording of Bruckner's fourth does exist!

Not your comment I know, but there's Böhm, Wand and Rogner ... all admittedly Japanese pressings. I have the first two. I'd REALLY like to see Celibidache's very fine performance transferred to SA-CD, the strings on the CD transfer are awful. Hopefully the tapes are better than this. It wouldn't hurt to have some more modern performances of this work on SA-CD as well ... I'm sure there's a good market for them.

Perhaps Ucher mean't modern multi-channel DSD recordings as opposed to reissues from analog. It would be nice to see Kreizburg and the VSO do the 4th and the 6th as well. I would also like some more Schmidt. I think the PentaTone recording of his 4th is excellent!

Dear Seth,

We only have found Mahler 3 and Mahler 8 amongst the quad recordings. The producer of the third Symphony was Van Ginneken and nr 8 was done by Volker Straus. The latter used to place the orchestra in the center of the hall for all his recordings there.

Best,Pentaman

What year is that Mahler 3rd from? I believe Haitink recorded it in 1966, but I can't believe they were recording in Quadro in 1966.

Regards,

Steve

I was wrong about # 3. The other quad recording in the Mahler/Haitink/RCO cycle is #5. It was recorded in 1970. The producer was Van Ginneken, who also did the recording of the 8th symphony which will be released in a few months.

Sorry for the confusion.

BTW, the Mahler 3rd by Haitink will be re-reissued on CD by Universal next month:

Pentaman, are we going to hear anything more from the Storioni Trio (I recommend the Beethoven disc highly), or from conductor Marco Boni (ditto for the Haydn symphony disc).

MILLE GRAZIE!!! Also looking forward to the recording of Tosca, and any other complete operas.

Thanks,
Matt

Here are a couple of questions for Pentaman:

1.) Is it possible that the three-channel recordings of Handel Messiah with Colin Davis or the Liszt piano concerti with Richter could be released on Pentatone -- even though they have no rear channels?

2.) I've always had a suspicion that some of the Monteux LSO Philips recordings made at the end of his life might have used those same 3-channel techniques. (i.e. Debussy Martyre de Saint Sebastian & Images). Am I right?

It would be thrilling to have any of those recordings released on MC SACD!
