I will say that if I had to make cuts I would try really hard to keep Mari Kodama, Martin Helmchen and Nareh Arghamanyan

Would change only Chen (in) for Kodama (Out) on your list.

Dear PentaMan,
I am fan of your recordings, buy most of them.
But: Why did Pentatone record the latest Wagner Operas using PCM instead of DSD? I am a bit disappointed concerning the sound for example of Tannhäuser. Strings and vocals sound a bit more shrill compared with the Holländer (DSD).
The latest recordings I got were the Liszt and the Bach. Both great in interpretation and sound.
Any chance that you return to DSD when recording the Ring?
What are the reasons? Technical?
Do not hope that Pentatone abandons its philosophy recording in DSD whereever possible.
Wishes for the future: More operas in DSD, Verdi ?! (2013 also Verdi-year).

A Polyhymnia recorded Requiem could be something amazing.

All Wagner operss are recorded in PCM because of technical restrictions in Berlin. By error on the first 2 releases (Holländer and Meistersinger) DSD was printed instead of PCM, because the product manager was not prperly briefed on this. Where possible we will continue to record in DSD

Best, PentaMan

Dear PentaMan,

thanks for the information. So my listening experience seemed to be influenced by my expectations!
Inspite of that, I am glad that you will continue recording in DSD.
What I should add: The "Tannhäuser" is great in interpretation, I like it and can recommend it.
Now I am looking forward to the "Ring" ...
Anyway: Any chance for other operas in the future, Verdi, Donizetti,Puccini, Mozart ... ?

Similar restrictions apply at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam as has been discussed in previous threads so Polyhymnia record for RCO Live in PCM as well. Pity but sometimes the realities of life are insurmountable.

Nevertheless the sub-text of Pentaman's statement is that DSD produces better results than PCM so DSD is their default recording technique. It's the old time domain argument which has always seemed right to me.

Dear PentaMan,

Is there any hope of getting the New Dutch Academy to record Bach's A Musical Offering BWV 1079? I think I'd prefer a more traditional approach than that of Gerd Zacher. A DSD recording instead of PCM would be nice, too.

No plans so far. Will keep your suggestion in mind
