Discussion: Schubert: Piano Sonata D.960, Moments musicaux - Lazic

I've just ordered this recording of Schubert's Piano Sonata D.960 as it's one of my favourite pieces for solo piano but is very poorly under-represented in the SACD catalogue. I like the Mitsuko Uchida RBCD version on Philips, but this seems to be one of very few versions on the superior format.

Should I be expecting a great disc (Channel haven't disappointed me yet)?

Superb performances of the D960 and the Moments Musicaux as well. One peculiar factor though is that the listening perspective is that of the pianist, with the low notes on the left and the treble on the right. But my favorite Lazic disc is still Liaisons Vol. 1 - Dejan Lazic, juxtaposing Scarlatti and Bartok, which to me felt really more like "Contrasts" than "Liaisons."

Thanks Arnaldo, looking forward to it.

Perhaps by "Liasons" he meant the idea of an interaction between two parties (in this case the music of Scarlatti and Bartok) and we are supposed to consider the "Contrast" or otherwise, between them?

I do like Scarlatti - will look that disc up. I guess it's Domenico rather than Alessandro or the third one I can't remember?!

It's Domenico Scarlatti. And the "contrast" as Lazic transitions back and forth between Scarlatti and Bartok, is simply startling. It's also a more sparkling recording than the Schubert, which kind of sounds a bit soft to my ears...

Wow! Sounds fascinating Arny, another trip to Amazon!

Arnaldo,
Interesting that you feel the sound is from the perspective of the pianist.
My microphones were a good 4 meters away from the piano off to the side. (facing the piano this would be the right side!) One gets reflections from the hall of course but in my recollection certainly not my intentions and not what I hear. (I remember growing up and listening to phase 4 recordings of piano my father had which WAS the intention)

greetings.

Thankyou for the insight into the recording Jared and thanks for giving us such a great library of SACDs, I'll report back when I receive the disc. Looking forward to it, D.960 is one of my favourite pieces of music and often brings me to tears.

Arnaldo - I'll give it the headphone treatment too.

Mitsuko Uchida's recordings are far more insightful and satisfying IMHO having invested in both.
