But the question is: does the CD layer also have a 5.1 mix ;-)

If it was DTS encoded, why YES!

There ARE SACD hybrids which offer HDCD encoding (LINN comes to mind) so it could conceivably be DTS encoded 96/24 but why bother when you're presumably buying it for the hi~rez stereo and multichannel layers!

Also, HDCD and DTS incur licensing fees as does SACD so if you want the list price to skyrocket.............

Rammiepie there was also Dolby Surround and Circle Surround, both of which were matrix-encoded into two audio tracks for video cassettes and CDs. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Surround

With a Dolby surround processor they played surround and played stereo without. Telarc, Delos and several other labels released a lot of Surround Sound CDs, there were even some rock ones. When Dolby Digital come out with it's discreet rear channels most people quite adding Dolby Surround to their CDs however I do sometimes wonder if some of the Telarc surround SACDs still have it stealthily on the CD layer.

mmm. Not quite. Not per disc. Per encoder and per decoder, technically, in the case of DTS and HDCD. You don't have to get a "SACD License" to make a SACD. You just make one. :)

Teresa, I had Circle Surround decoding on my older Theta Receiver and discs from DMP which were circle surround encoded and numerous Dolby Surround RBCDs......

IMO, they were NO competition for DTS.

I also had my Theta Laserdisc player modified for Dolby Digital at great expense when Laserdiscs began encoding their discs with DD.

But nothing in my opinion beats DVD~A and SACD in terms of the mch experience and the weakness/culprit inherent in all the matrixed formats was the decoders......NOT ready for primetime........

And yes I even had four channel reel to reels with an accompanying four channel dolby b decoder and although discreet, they were hissy as Hades.......I'm sure today's custom electronics and newer heads would all but alleviate this problem but why bother when a 5" optical disc fits the bill quite nicely.

Michi, thanks for clearing that up but in the case of SACD I was more or less referring to the premium price of pressing an SACD (I know there was NO license fee associated with per se making an SACD).

Well, we're not quite to Amazon or CDUniverse yet, but Elusive Disc and Music Direct have jumped on board and their prices + shipping typically beat AS:

Michi, do you know if the WYWH SACD was mastered in DSD @2.8MHz or 24/96 pcm?
