Thread: Will Aqualung ever be released in 5.1 SACD?

Well, the highly anticipated Wish You Were Here SACD has finally arrived to great reviews and fanfare but when will the next big announcement regarding Rock/Pop Titles in 5.1 materialize?

Two years ago (and I AM embarrased) I cautioned posters on SA~CD.net not to buy into Audio Fidelity's 24k Simon and Garfunkel releases hinting that 4.0 SACDs were imminent. And Michi substantiated my claims promising BIG things in store (Dylan and a few other surprises). Well, the Dylan titles have been announced for release on Stereo SACD with the only surprise being "The Basement Tapes (indeed good news) but other than reissues of Miles Davis stereo SACDs, I, for one am breathlessly awaiting the promised surround titles that were merely "hinted" at what seems like eons ago.

My vote would be for Aqualung (and the also announced 5.1 Blu~Ray of Stand......a live in concert BD) for SACD release since I heard the re~mastering by Steve Wilson is superb. (Both releases are currently part of immersion box sets}

But I'm hoping that S&G and all the other pop/rock "surprises" surface.

So, Michi, would you mind very much stepping out from behind the curtain and give us a hint.........in the spirit of the (gulp!) HOLIDAY SEASON :)>*

There I said it!

+1

It is ridiculous that only an expensive deluxe box is available for those who want to buy Aqualung in hires stereo/surround.

It's really not a bad price for what you get. You get an awesome LP, four discs all of which are awesome.

Steve Wilson's 5.1 mix and new stereo mixes are excellent. Combine that with the original quad mix with both 5.1 and quad in LPCM and DTS-MA, you have an awesome surround package. Not to mention you have a direct to disc stereo recording in 24/96 that is great too.

The unreleased tracks are all really cool as well. Especially the early versions of Wind Up (this is the version on the quad mix) and Wondering Aloud (the full version).

I definitely would not call this box overly priced. It really is worth every penny. Yea it would be great if it came out on SACD with the new 5.1 and stereo mixes, maybe the quad as well, but that doesn't mean this is a bad box. This and my WYWH SACD are easily my best digital pickups in a good while.

Mattman, the box set garnered great reviews but all I really want is the 5.1 of Aqualung. It's like buying a BD movie with 25 hours of supplemental material when all I really want is the movie, itself.

For collectors and purists immersion box sets are "essential," but I don't need the LP or outtakes... so hopefully Steve Wilson's stellar work on Aqualung will materialize into a single SACD.........

I suspect if Auqalung 5.1 ever sees the light of day outside of the collector´s box it will be on DVD-A.

Ironically I am listening to the MFSL Aqualung LP this very minute, IMHO it would be an excellent choice for SACD release, that is if it's mastered like the MFSL LP and not the poor sounding bass-shy standard LP and CD versions. BTW it's one MFSL's best sounding LPs, my hope would be a remastering by MFSL or Analogue Productions.

Steve Wilson who remixed Aqualung for 5.1 released his last album "Grace For Drowning" as a Blu~Ray Audio Disc (Trippy videos and great 5.1 DTS Lossless, BTW) and his previous 5.1 remix of Caravan's " In The Land Of Grey and Pink" was released as a DVD~Video disc with DD and DTS surround and my guess is that the BD disc will eventually be released separately to cash in.

And Teresa, if MoFi did tackle it, it would be a stereo, only, SACD which I think would make a lot of people very, very, very, very unhappy!

But since Capitol Records has the final say ....... Analogue Productions might be a good bet for SACD 5.1.

I honestly wouldn't be surprised if a different album of theirs came out on SACD before Aqualung due to the success of the box set. Maybe try to expand on their catalog. Thick as a Brick would make an awesome SACD.

See my post above.....it will be a live 5.1 version of Stand..........yet another immersion box set. I'm sure Thick As A Brick is already in the works, though.

And Thick As A Brick are those ailing record companies who don't see how well WYWH is selling as a 5.1 SACD and should start re~releasing more 5.1 classic Rock which does have a market if the title is "choice!"
