I own Depeche Mode Playing The Angel the deluxe edition and its supposed to be SACD and i bought it years ago but i only began recently taking SACD seriously recently and never payed much attention to the lights on my SACD player but i thought the SACD wasnt much special but when i played it i noticed that it only plays CD not SACD which it is supposed to.

I can't remember if i read somewhere that some first pressings don't have the SACD layer is that correct? I have no problems playing any other SACD discs and all play correct accept this disc! Any help info is appriciated.

Does the disc have the SACD logo?

In Europe, the deluxe edition was released as a hybrid SACD + DVD combo, but in the US it was just a CD+DVD package.

you probably have the US version which is not an SACD because the only the european version has an SACD and you can tell because the SACD will have an SACD logo on it and so will the case so i hope that answers you question if not please check the link below:

My version of Playing The Angel was one of the few DM remasters to be housed in a super jewel box and it does sound fantastic in 5.1 SACD playback. The RHINO US remasters are DTS and DD so you did pick up the wrong edition {or the European remasters with a PAL DVD included}. The entire DM SACD catalog is in desperate need of a repressing as new and used, the SACDs are now commanding big bucks, if you can even find them.

Hi thanks for the replies, I definitely have the European version as it even has the SACD logo on the disc and case but only plays CD version.

Cyp, what player do you have? Could you show us a photo of the disc?

My copy of the 1st pressing was bought on the day of issue here in the UK. The SACD logo is very very inconspicious on both the disc and case. The giveaway is of course the colour of the disc SACD hybrids are slightly golden coloured as opposed to silver, it sounds very very good in surround.

Mine is the same (european and housed in a super jewel case), it's hybrid (multichannel/stereo) SACD (logo printed in the back side and disc in minuature size). By the way, the back side of the case states DVD Video and DTS 94/24 logos but in my players (Onkyo/Oppo) lights only the plain DTS indicator.

Agreed, it sounds awesome!

Yes mine is the same its a red disc and slight gold underside (playing) with the SACD logo and Stereo and MC. My DVD/SACD player is Sony DVP NS 700V yes its old but works fine and i checked again it wont play the SACD layer only CD!

Then the only thing is that the laser may be slightly misaligned and thus be able to read one layer and not the other, at the moment it may only affect the DM disc but in time other discs may start showing the same symptoms, if you know someone who has an SACD player and is willing see if their player plays it correctly, If is playable on another player as an SACD the you can elimate the disc or the player.
