You can see and hear this live performance complete on Youtube.
Just search using this string:

G. Mahler - Symphony No. 8 in E-flat major (Gürzenich Orchestra, Stenz)

Love that the giant Tam-tam got it's own video shot during the climactic finale
as well as the shots of the off stage brass from the rear of the hall.

Oh,
Then buy the disc.

Thank you for the link, a fun, exciting listen, though I hope they edited the 1st Soprano's flat solo Bb which is meant to float ecstatically above the final chorus @ 1:14:36. Yikes! One can see a girl in the children's choir react at that moment; thank God for the honesty of children. : ) I find Elizabeth Connell unforgettable in this harrowing passage (Tennstedt/EMI).

PS: check out Rattle's with the National Youth Orchestra of Britain, a few rec's down. I believe that's Royal Albert Hall? What a noise they make, too.

Perhaps our site reviewer John Miller can enlighten us on that?
My copy has not arrived yet.

According to the booklet, it was recorded over 4 days and even more noticeable than the odd note here or there as it is on YouTube, the OC engineers have a very different (vastly less spotlight) balance than the TV engineers. Geohominid is spot on - wonderful account.

Yeah. I was there, about 8 rows from the front. Amazing to see live with such forces.

At the end of the first half, a guy standing next to us screams out "Wow!". Rattle turns round and looks straight at us (the chap was just over 5', myself and my colleague over 6', so we got the blame).
They managed to edit it out of the TV broadcast (wasn't live) and the repeat radio broadcast.

I'm SO jealous, never knew this performance was available. I'm not usually a Sir Simon fan as he's gotten so fussy.

All those incredibly-talented young people too; you must have left knowing/thinking that the future is in good hands.
