Discussion: Berlioz: Overtures - Andrew Davis

No question the Bergen Philharmonic are in a rich vein of form right now thanks in no small part to Maestro Andrew Litton who has almost single-handedly it seems raised them to world-level consciousness. Here they turn up yet again on a different label under the guiding hands of Sir Andrew Davis - I've never understood how so many knighthoods are awarded to blokes who wield sticks about in front of otherwise sane people for money, but that's another story.

Never-the-less an evident synergy between them results in a rumbustious set of performances of the seven most popular overtures of Berlioz spectacularly recorded with superb acoustics that is as good as just about anything else in the catalogue including the oft-lauded earlier SCD survey.

This really is all about "every household should have one" as a demonstration disc or to add cheer on a cheerless day. It's contagious foot-tapping stuff that deserves great success and who knows it might even make the pop charts!

Anyway don't waste time mulling it over get thee down to a store and buy one

Is that as in French progressive metal or Mr Nice & Easy? Nothing wrong with a bit of adrenalin flow now and again.

It appears that the Bergen Phil is now the darling of the recording labels - Chandos, BIS, Hyperion are actively making recordings with them. I think Chandos produces the best sound.

By the way, what happens to the Oslo Phil? They were once the glory of the Nordic bands under EMI.

I hope Maestro Litton moves to a front rank orchestra but I read he was linked to Buffalo... ? What must he do to lead the BSO or CSO? Seems BIS will lose the Bergen Phil to Chandos as Gardner works for them

FTA:

Under Andrew Litton the Bergen PO has recorded 18 CDs for BIS, Chandos and Hyperion and they will continue to record together, including the Prokofiev symphony cycle currently under way from BIS.
