I am not deep into classical music, but this Mussorgski theme is beautiful. I bought a few of the in here listed versions, but i dont know what to think about some of them.

The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Jean-Claude Casadesus:

The best one, really an impressive Multichannel version, nothing to say here

Mercury Living Presence, both piano version by Byran Janis and Orchestral by Minneapolis Symphony Orchestra:

This is a 3 Channel Stereo version, no "real" Multichannel, this should be explained better. I never heard before of a 3 channel version, but it is interesting. Here the question if this is to be seen often in classical music or more an exception.

New Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Charles Mackerras:

Multichannel it says, but beside the front speakers only the right rear speaker giving sound ( all settings ok for sure ). Here the question if this is like a bad print or normal as well, but strange anyways to me.

National Symphony Orchestra of Ukraine conducted by Theodore Kuchar:

nothing out of the rear speaker although it is explained as 5.1. surround sound. And the CD layer is playing something completely different ..lol..

Please brighten my mind.

All the RCA Living Stereo and Mercury Living Presence multichannel discs are 3 channel stereo. They were recorded from 3 microphones (LCR) onto 3 track tape. They're not surround, but I think they sound stunning nonetheless.

As for the Naxos disc (Ukraine + Theodore Kuchar), you have different music on the normal CD layer? I've just tried a couple of bits of my copy and it's the right music. Do you actually mean *nothing* out of the rear speakers, or do you mean that you can't hear them when listening to the music?
(oops, didn't mean to quote all that, and now can't remove it)

Sorry, it is the Vanguard Classics, New Philharmonia Orchestra conducted by Mackerras having something completely different on the CD layer not the Ukraine, and in surround mode no sound out of the left rear speaker but out of the center as well, like a 4 - channel CD.

The Ukraine is definately no surround in my opinion. I meant that there is really no sound out of the rear speaker, but out of the center, so it must be a 3 - Channel version, or ?

The Ukraine is definitely 5.1, sound out of all of my speakers. Sounds like you might have a bad connection or something...

haha..looks like ! But all my settings are ok, listening right now to the strange Police CD Every breath you take, from which i am still not sure what to think. I do not like the Ukraine version anyways, the weakest version to me out of the four i have now, but strange ....

ooooops ... i turned my rears to maximum sound and .... heard really something..lol...but its really very silent like a weak 5.1. mix. At least this is cleared now.

Hmm. You say you're not "deep into classical music"? You do know that most Classical SACDs just use the surround channels for room ambience with all the instruments placed at the front? The Royal Philharmonic discs are probably the most common exception to this rule.

Hi,

I have another one, which sounds very good. But I do not know, whether this one is a good interpretation:

Denes Varjon (Piano) Radio Symphonie Orchester Berlin Gilbert Livine (conductor).
Both versions (Piano and Orchestral by Maurice Ravel) are on this Multichannel-Hybrid-SACD.
It's from "Capriccio" and the Nr. is 71047.

All the best

I am not sure but I believe the Vanguard multi-channel series actually do (erroneously in my judgement) have instruments coming out of the rear channels. This is gimmickery and I hope it will have a short life in the market. The purpose of the rear channels is to assist in creating the illusion of placing the listener in the concert hall. So all you should get, in an ideal recording from those rear speakers is a sense of being in an enlarged space instead of your listening room. Ideally you should be able to recognize the actual hall the recording was made in if you are familiar with its sound. If you have the Vanguard recording it probably does sit you in the middle of the orchestra and if you don't hear instruments coming out of the rear speakers something is likely wrong. Again, I haven't heard this yet just read about it. I bought the thing by mistake and I would check it out for sure for you but I am about two days away from completing my multi-channel system.

I agree that it is a great piece of music! I heard it played in Boston last year in Symphony Hall - that was terrific.

This sounds logical to me. I didnt expect much more as an ambience, like you describe it, so i was positive surprised about the Royal Philharmonic edition, which seems very expressive to me. But as i said before, some of the 3 - channel ones did find my applause as well.
