hi all, ive just recently decided to go for an sacd setup and so far i have steely dan gaucho, dire straights brothers in arms and pink floyd dsotm all on sacd format, i had these by luck and only realised when someone visited my flat for a party and explained the whole sacd thing to me.

now i already own two bose 301 speakers a standard sony seperate amp and also seperate cd player both will be going to a new home. so ive bought a bugget sony dvd player which also plays cd's and sacd's and im about to get a cheap 5.1 reciever/amp.

what i would like to know is:

if i go from the standard white and red cable from the sacd player through the amp that will have 5.1 speakers coming from it will it play in the sacd format or will i need to go from player to amp with different cables?

also for now before i get the 5.1 speakers will the sacd sound different through my normal 2 bose 301 speakers at all or will it just sound like a normal cd?

cheers for your help guys

Dear droopy99

Welcome to the sacd club!

Usually, an HDMI cable is used between the player and the receiver to carry both video and audio (including any surround sound from an SACD, DVD or Blu-ray) - I suggest you check the player and receiver.

The alternative is 6 cables to carry the surround sound alone, which may not be possible with new cheap players.

As Johnbs has suggested, check what connection options you have from your player - and how they will match with the multi-channel receiver you plan on buying. Your player manual should also give you a clue as to how much choice you have with passing SACD (DSD) audio from your player to multi-channel receiver. On my SACD player, purely as an example, I have two choices of connection. Either the analogue outputs (5.1 and/or stereo), or HDMI. I decided to use the analogue outputs for two reasons. Firstly, that's what the manufacturer recommended, and finally, the HDMI was a simple (i.e. 1) connection through to my display for video purposes.

Your final question - although simple - is perhaps complex to answer. All things being equal, I suspect most people with reasobaly good ears would hear a difference. Not all SACDs sound similar (from an audio-quality point of view), and neither do all speakers. On top of that, who's to say we all hear the same? I did some auditioning before I took the decision to buy my hi-res player and receiver - and I don't regret any of it, including taking the plunge. For me, in general terms, it's very easy to hear the difference between SACDs and CDs - and the additional benefit of multi-channel audio over stereo-only is also big for me.

hi guys thanks for the replys.

here is the player i have:its a sony ns705v dvd sacd player and the pic of connections, are any of these helpful? im confused with the 5.1 bit wouldnt the sound be really weak if the speakers just connect to the back of the dvd player or do the cables go from the 5.1 section on the back of dvd player and then into the back of the reciever/amp and then on the reciever/amp is another out 5.1 section for the speakers to go from? its quite confusing for me sorry if i sound like an idiot.

You would use the 5.1 out of the player to the receiver but budget receivers nowadays don't have analog 5.1 input. If yours do you hook the 6 cables to the 5.1 input. From the receiver you connect the 2 front, center, 2 rear and the subwoofer.

We are not allowed to put links but I found this on ebay for 160 bucks. Denon AVR 3300 5.1 - 8 Preamp Outputs Total 850 Watts. Used. It does have 5.1 analog input. Because its a older model no HDMI

right ok thanks, so what is the standard way people connect there players to amps? is it hdmi?
and what about old players like mine? is the way im having to do it the way it was done when these old players came about? it seems like a lot of effort and wires involved or was that just the nature of the beast.

Most people still like to use the 5.1 analog using 6 cables. HDMI is simpler because you only use 1 cable for audio and video. Personal taste.

right ok so that is the way it is.

so just to recap

sacd player 5.1 output cables go from that into back of av reciever input and then the 5 speaker cables connect to the av reciever and im good to go?

im looking forward to this now, i'll aim to get that denon avr 3300 and then i will probably get an early bose subwoofer and 4 small speakers and i should be good to go right? :)

i already have gaucho, pink floyd and dire straights which i think is a nice start?
