Allow me to preface my remarks by saying I'm not much of Dolly Parton Fan. I do like some country music and most bluegrass. But if this album is a representation of Dolly's body of work, then I need to change my opinion. Her voice is pure magic. It has an angelic quality that simply mesmerizes and transports me to places I did not know existed in the human heart. The title tack, Mountain Angel,& Down from Dover are lyrically little more than typical country tales of woe. But with Dolly's voice they turn from common fair to heart wrenching ballads. You can hear the wail of anguish from the the Mountain Angel. You can feel the crushing heartbreak from the girl waiting for her beau from dover. Fortunately there is also some livelier verse on the album(otherwise you might be jumping off the nearest bridge in despair at the human condition); Shine, I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby & Marry Me, are all light hearted and just plain fun to listen to. The music is good, the recording is stunning, and Dolly is nothing short of a Goddess. This is fast becoming a reference recording for me.

I dont know why those who recommend this disc dont post a review.Dolly has got her good points,a fabulous voice and she is a tremendous song writer to add to those. Throw in some excellent musicians and top quality recordings which include a fair variety of styles and what have you got. Myself I prefer her "pure" country and tracks like Shine and I get a kick out of you are fodder compared with the rest of this album.Even though these tracks were originally rejected from earlier albums and one is a reworking of an earlier release its still great stuff.Another review mentions the balance between her powerfull voice and the backing..This may be just about true on both her sacd albums. The CD layer is also remarkable.Dave

This is a great album by Dolly Parton continuing her return to country roots style from her previous two new albums, still showcasing her high registered pure vocal along with some fun storytelling in her own songs and a few covers to add in.

However, I mainly buy SACD for the multichannel mixes, and this disc is ruined by poor mastering in the multichannel mix.

The bass is doubled so that the low frequencies present in the 5.0 full range DSD channels are duplicated in the LFE .1 channel so that, when played back in 5.1, the bass is resonating wildly and overpowering the music.

At first I wondered if the engineers had simply amplified the LFE sound channel by +10dB, misunderstanding the Scarlettbook specification for SACD where the LFE channel should be +10dB higher than it would be on a DVD or DVD-Audio i.e. at normal volume.

However, the disc simply sounds better and "right" with the subwoofer completely turned off and more accurately reflects the sound balance of the stereo DSD and the Redbook CD layers.

This should surely have been spotted prior to authoring these discs, but at least it can simply be corrected in my case by powering off the subwoofer as I listen to SACD in DSD direct to analogue.

(But note that if you have "small" speakers or if your SACD player performs DSD to PCM conversion like many players, and do not output pure DSD , then the options are not so good. You would have to set all speakers to large AND enable the sub (to stop the incorrect LFE being mixed into the main channels) AND turn off your subwoofer at it's power switch and even then, if you have small / non full range speakers then you will lose all the low frequencies that your speakers can't produce)
