I noticed recently that I really like Harmonia Mundi sound. Often close-miked, but in a way that reveals beautifully the tone richness of the instruments, and the recordings usually still sound very free with a lot of air. Again maybe some will argue with that and it depends a lot on your hi-fi system.
I also have the B minor Mass version by the same players, which I love. But maybe this one even better, I feel that the playing and the recording are better on this one. The "Actus Tragicus" BWV 106 is a master piece, and my feeling at the moment is that "Weinen, Klagen, Sorgen, Zagen" BWV 12 is one of the most beautiful works Bach ever wrote in spite of his very young age (composed in 1714, Bach was 29 then).
To me these players have the ideal style to play Bach, clean (unlike those big old symphonic orchestras that usually sound in this kind of music the way Mc Donald feels in my mouth), but emotionally deep (unlike the Suzuki recordings that are clean in style but sound a bit like a computer talking).
The singers are amazing too, and to conclude I would say that this SACD is a spiritual odyssey I like to experience as much as I can.
