Having used a not so good webshop to order my Talk Talk SACD’s, I had to wait a couple of weeks for the to arrive. And these were some hard weeks. Ever since I read the notification of the up coming release of both The Colour of Spring and Spirit of Eden I was really looking forward to these discs.
Having had the time to listen to both discs a couple of times I now feel it’s time to put my opinions into words.
From the moment the first notes of “Happiness is Easy” is easy come through the speakers it’s clear this SACD is well worth the wait. The music though familiar comes to you with a freshness I have never heard before. The excellent balance of the instruments on this album put together with the voice of Mark Hollis immediately brings back the feeling you had when you first heard these songs in 1986. This album is excellent. And even though it was not so successful as it’s predecessor it still in many ways stays a much better album. There is a lot more balance in these recordings than there were in It’s my life.
If you liked Talk Talk during the 80’s this is a great album to buy. It has some of their big hits on it: Happiness is easy, Life’s what you make it and Give it up. But also tracks like Chameleon Day and I don’t believe you are well worth it.
Sound quality is very, very nice.

What a pleasant surprise it was to see Talk Talk on the upcoming releases from EMI. Mark Hollis and his mates, originally recruited by EMI to be the next Duran Duran, churned out some amazing albums. I am happy to write that their albums have never sounded better.

The Colour of Spring, their third album, followed It's My Life. Although not the hit generating album its predecessor was, there is much to admire here. From the opening chord of "Happiness is Easy" to "Time It's Time", Talk Talk use of keyboards and the powerful instrument known as Mark Hollis voice propel the listener on an interesting voyage. "Life's what you make it" has one of the most honest and true messages ever from a rock song. "Living in another world" reaches heights that few of Talk Talk's peers could touch. Often imitated in their time, no one could match the unique style of music crafted by Talk Talk. Even if you know them only by hits like "It's My Life" and "Talk Talk", you will find lots to enjoy here.

And speaking of things to enjoy, this disc is yet another great sounding SA-CD from EMI. Compared to redbook, there is no comparison. Bass is amazingly low and deep, the seperation within the deep rthyms that make this album have never sounded clearer and the vocals are strong and clear. This is the best 80's release in stereo I have heard on SACD yet. If there is only 1 minor quibble is that EMI left off text for the song titles. However, that is a minor issue. If you are a Talk Talk fan, this one is a no brainer. Highly recommended.

If you are even a casual fan of 80's music, this album is a must-have. Full of hits, and an album to listen to beginning to end. The SACD was a pleasant suprise as well. I do find the sonics on Spirit of Eden a little better, but the content on this disc is superb. Highly recommended for content and recommended for sonics. Spend the few extra dollars for this SACD: this album is worth it.
