Performance: Sonics: |
I was more than thrilled when I heard that Telarc was going to re-release this as an SACD!!! I had both of the old redbook CDs as well as one of the Telarc LPs, and when I heard that it was coming out, I jumped for joy!!!
The sound is simply top notch, considering this was an original digital recording to start with. As a forever fan of Frederick Fennell, I love his interpretations. I can only imagine what those sessions were like, having some of the premier wind and percussion players from the world class Cleveland Orchestra playing music that many had not played since high school (and for some of them, that was a LONG time ago!!!).
The sonics are top notch and offer serious improvements in sound staging, imaging, as well as a much better sense of depth that was missing from the original redbook CDs.
These pieces are played with gusto, and to hear "serious" musicians play with such fun and joy has to be heard to appreciate. Even a person who is not a band geek (like me) can really enjoy this SACD.
Now, the bad news (well, not really bad). I am going to take Telarc to task for leaving out a few selections. Remember, this is a compilation of TWO CDs, so I know that space was at a premium. However, I think that any serious band nerd or fan (present company included) would have paid to have two SACDs with ALL of the music included!!! This however does not chance my rating!!!
My$.02!!!!
