Performance:   Sonics:
Sonically, this is one of the best SACDS to be released by Sony. The spatial definition, scope and depth are amazing, almost giving the impression of a multi-channel recording. The timbre of the piano and all other instruments is very natural, and the orchestral playing is rich and warm. It would be difficult to find an analog recording that sounds better on SACD than this one. Interpretatively, there may be more electrifying versions, but this has always been my favourite because it offers a perfect blend of virtuosity and lyricism. The entry of the famous lyrical theme in the "Rhapsody in Blue" is handled magnificently. As an LP, this CBS recording always had a special place in my collection, but now the music shines out in its fully glory. Warmly recommended.

Performance:
Bernstein said that the distinctive feature of certain American music is that it is confident and casual. When you look at documentary footage of say, Americans at mid-century, you see it: gum chewing confident and casual. Friendly swagger. Bernstein captures this in this recording. This in not just good, but brilliant. Great sound too.

Performance:   Sonics:
This is a good SACD. Just good. Good sonically, and a good execution of the performance. It certainly does not give me goosebumps like the best classical performances (such as those from Telarc and other elite SACD labels), nor does it annoy and irritate (I think we've all heard at least one or two SACDs that are guilty of this). Personally, I like instrumental Gershwin, because I think he was the Britney Spears of his time when it came to lyrics. Surely "Rhapsody in Blue" was his premier instrumental piece, and Bernstein handles it competently (as does the orchestra).

So if you like Gershwin, and you are willing to purchase this disc with just slightly tempered expectations, this might be a reasonable purchase.
