I was suprised to see no one has posted a review of this. When I started I think I realized why. This is a top quality disc and will reward anyone who tales a chance on something thats not too modern and unusual,ie no plink plnk plick or outrageous 12 tone. The five movement symphony for string orchestra starts with a haunting prelude, follows with a dramatic scherzo, then a sweet nocturne, longest movement at 9 minutes, a solemnish Fugue and finishes quietly with a long Postlude.Apparantly the works origins were a string quartet and to some extent this becomes releveant to the works limitations as a symphony.37 minutes 28.
The following suite from the film Red Violin for Solo Violin Timpani Percussion Harp and strings is a contrasting more lively work excellently played and recorded as is the symphony/ It is sub devided into 11 parts Main title Annas theme etc a total of 25 minutes.Certainly overall the music seems to be dominated by either sadness or melancholy but as i havent seen the film or got totally to grips with the Pulizer prizewinning symphony?...D
