Just heard it. Enthralling performance. I own recordings by Sinopoli and Ozawa, and felt that this ranks among the best. Multichannel performance was vey good and for the first time made me feel that a well recorded opera can use the power of SACD when sound engineers don't go crazy with the 5 channels. The only other opera I own was disappointing(Boheme/Chailly/Decca). Interpretation was standard and according to the liner notes, well rehearsed in concert performances. My favorite is still the Ozawa, but I enjoyed the SACD dynamics. Cover does not state that the disc is multichannel, but turns out to be. Libretto is compressed in small text and does not do a side by side of the German with English. Not a big deal if you have other versions. CD Universe came through fine with shipping on time and almost USD 10 cheaper than Amazon.

A special opportunity to meet Strauss in multichannel again....

I have bought this doubledisc due to Felicity Palmer's presence as Klytämnestra, since I adore her "Kabanicha" (sung in Czech), stepmother of "Katya Kabanova" (written by Janacek) with Glyndebourne Festival under Derek Bailey.

Deborah Polaski is Wagnerian singerin so her presence here is more than logigal.

WDR is an orchestra that delivers outstanding performance (live and studio). This is my first encounter with Semyon Bychkov, so I cannot compare his conducting with oter works.

At first hering all feels well performed and recorded....

Final verdict: Recommended!
