Spyro Gyra: Deep End

It's refreshing to find another "real" surround album, given that the great majority of engineers choose to deliver ambience-only surround channels (many of which are pretty much indistinguishable from the "surround" settings on our receivers).

On my car system (where I have a center channel speaker) I found the center channel's level a bit weak, leading to what I call "knee music", but the sound was still very good.

This album really shone on my home system, where I have no center channel speaker but my main speakers are relatively close, ensuring a good sound stage.

One of the cuts has a wonderful surround effect, but I don't want to spoil it for you. If you buy Spyro Gyra to fall asleep, you'll WAKE UP when you hear this very musical "gimmick".

I'm not a Spyro Gyra fan per se, but this album strikes me as a very good effort overall.

Spyro Gyra are making high standard pop-jazz fusion for decades, driving rhythms, pleasant melodies and arrangements. It is not always something spectacular new they are presenting but it is good melodic music with rhythms for dancing. Music for people who are not hardcore jazz fans but for whom common pop music is too stupid. Rhythms and moods are verified and it is fun listening throughout the whole disc, also because of its very good sonics. The sound is full, rich of colour, good soundstage and imaging, dynamic, brilliant.
