Performance:   Sonics:
This is an excellent version of Smetana's cycle. It is a four-channel recording dating from 1975, which suggests it may be an original quad recording. The Czech Philharmonic play this kind of music to the manner born. Vaclav Neumann, who was famous for his reading of "Vltava" (there is a DVD of him rehearsing this piece), gives a glowing performance, shedding light on many details you won't hear in other readings. "From Bohemia's Woods and Meadows" (often played rather insensitively) benefits especially from his warm, but powerful approach. I did not notice any distortion, only an occasional touch of harshness in the violins, especially at the beginning of "Sarka". The sound of the massed strings is usually rich and silky, that of the brass, including the trumpets, brilliant but natural. I prefer this recording to the SACD alternatives (Susskind and Davis), but all three versions are quite satisfying.

Performance:   Sonics:
It's not a bad performance, and I recall that the LPs got pretty good reviews in the British press when it first came out. I think however, that this one is done in by the screechy sound in forte string passages, trumpet and piccolo. I had to turn it down and then turn it down again. Not because it was too loud, but because at the levels I like to listen, the distortion was too overbearing.
