Another highly interesting and rewarding disc.More a report than a review. The symphony could possibly be unfairly described as Shostakovich 16th and is written for a fairly large Orchestra lastsover 40 minutes in one movement.
Occasionally he have glimpses of Mahler ,Beethovens fifth and Respighi (Roman Trilogy) in the way each theme is worked and then moves on.Never outstays its welcome and has an ebb and flow which makes it easy but serious listening.I even thought of Stravinskys ballets at one time. This is no criticism but a guide to this Estonian symphonists work which contains great beauty at times especially its ending..Definitrly worthwhile.
The cello concerto like Shostakovitchs string ones inhabits another more complicated world.
Ironically the start of the concerto follows the symphany and almost could be part of it,it then develops into a beautifull theme and from there on develops into a much more individual piece.Even spotted the Roman trilogy feel at one point .Some unique sounds and playing seems required and is displayed here.Initial impression at over 30 minutes seems a bit long and diverse, some gymnastic playing is required and it also ends in a quiet meditive way....It may well be that this concerto will be one of the cello concerto important hits of the decade.Definitely needs playing on its own as the main course few times..
Recording quality captures the wide and deep dynamics easily.Possibly one of the best discs of the year and certainly on the shortlist...Worth the wait...
