Performance:   Sonics:
Ukraninian born in 1937 This 1995 symphony starts in the Mahler world of his 6th/7th symphonies meanders into Scriabin at his easiest to appreciate level and then wonders into a music world that could be modern film music ALL at almost the same liesurely if not slow pace.
The first three movements of this huge ish Orchestral symphony blend effortlessly for 38 minutes and despite their beauty and musical interest only seem to vary in intesity.Occasionly this tempo slows and you could be forgiven for wishing the genuine Mahler moments of extreme or greater contrast could have been injected into the work or the performance..
The short 4th movement changes things slightly but no fireworks and even the fifth marked Vivace only seems to be at the same pace as the rest of the first three movements.Similair in style evoking Scriabin.
I suspect that a lot of people will tire of this sooner rather than later despite it fine playing and recording.52 minutes could have been improved if shortened and a contrasting work was a filler.
Supplied in type 2 sacd case with booklet.
