It was in 1995 that the complete recordings of Bach’s Cantatas by Masaaki Suzuki began being issued. He talks about it himself in an interview given to the remarkable magazine for ancient music “Goldberg”: “We began recording in 1995 just after the terrible Kobe earthquake. We had planned on doing it with a Japanese label, but they weren’t interested in the Cantatas. When I told them that to do the complete cycle would take twenty years, they were horrified. We had had contacts with the Swedish label BIS, whose founder Robert von Bahn came to see us in Tokyo. We spoke to him about our dream of recording all of Bach’s Cantatas. He is passionate about Japanese culture, which probably worked in our favor, but he was at first somewhat skeptical. We agreed to do a test…” Today, the test has received high marks. Midway though these works, Masaaki continues to explore the soul of the Leipzig cantor with constant precision bathed in a discourse of absolute clarity. In this volume 37, the Cantatas for Soloist BWV 169, BWV 170, BWV 35 and BWV 200 have the place of honor. Needless to say, this exemplarily well-recorded disc, is, like its precedents, a precious treasure.
