Performance:   Sonics:
First and foremost, let us salute the release of works that are relatively rarely recorded. The two symphonies by Weber, dating from the years 1807 and 1808, are singular in the composer’s output. They reflect the premises of the passage from the classical era to the romantic with an accomplished art of orchestration. The Concerto for Bassoon in F major was composed in 1811 and remains, like the Andante and Rondo Ungarese, scores dedicated to the bassoon, an instrument that was not very popular in the 19th century. After a remarkable recording devoted to the concertos and the quintet for clarinet (see Opus HD N° 22), Jean-Jacques Kantorow reunites with the Tapiola Sinfonietta and entices us once again by his colorist approach to the works performed. Jaakko Luoma’s exceptional bassoon is part of this “sound feast” that the multicanal magnifies even more, and he weaves his charm from beginning to end in a wisely constructed musical discourse. This, quite simply, is art with a capital A.
