Performance:   Sonics:
Having recently bought the Deep Purple Machine Head SACD is was happy to find another Deep Purple title. I didn’t know to much about Deep Purple, and I really like Machine Head, so I thought things couldn’t go wrong buying Concerto for Group and Orchestra.
And they didn’t really go wrong. But this disc was not what I expected. I was hoping for a live performance by the band playing their stuff and the Orchestra doing some nice arrangements in the background. Boy was I wrong, the first three tracks Deep Purple was no where to be found. All you get is a classical piece I for one had never heard off.
Although the opening act of disc one is not bad, I wasn’t impressed. Luckily for me things changed a bit and the latter part of disc one are some classic Deep Purple songs, like Hush and Smoke on the water.
Disc two is a performance of both the band and the Orchestra together. And even though it’s quiet interesting I’m not really impressed. Maybe it will grow on me, but I won’t put my money on it.
Sound quality overall is pretty good, nothing to spectacular. Sometimes a bit bland and dated. I wouldn’t recommend this disc to anyone but the die hard Deep Purple fans. At least they have a clue of what they are buying unlike me. For any other passers by wanting a Deep Purple SACD experience, stick to Machine Head.
