Performance:   Sonics:
The Catalogue of Birds by Olivier Messiaen is a tremendous work in all meanings of the word. “Without a doubt, Messiaen never showed more tranquil excess than in this gigantic undertaking. After two works for piano and orchestra (The Birds Awakening and Exotic Birds), he thus decided to write for solo piano, more supple, freer, without the constraints of coordinating a group of players. Instrumentally, the Catalogue of Birds is a great leap compared to Twenty Visions on the Enfant Jesus; and without this prodigious precedent, certain pages by Boulez, Stockhausen or Xenakis could not have been written.” (Harry Halbreich). With remarkable obstinacy, the musical Vision of Momo Kodama reaches summits of finesse, clarity, and poetry, but above all of deep interiority. His Birds are, above all, the reflection of the soul more so than of nature. He nourishes himself with interrogations rather than affirmations. It may be true that austerity is just around the corner, but this is insignificant in relation to a musical discourse of great beauty whose glowing colors blind both the spirit and the body. Here is a box set of three SACDs recorded in pure DSD, although only in stereo, that will for a long time to come haunt the ears of he who allows himself to be surrounded by a work that is unique on more than one level. Music lovers, run don’t walk…
