I am a big fan of Jimmy Smith's early jazz years albums and "Back At The Chicken Shack" is a classic that sounds even better on SACD. Back At The Chicken Ranch was recorded in 1963 an is one of the hallmark albums for lovers of the organ driven jazz. Jimmy blends soul, blues, jazz and even light fusion genres ....all in one album. Helping out are Stanley Turrentine (tenor saxophone), Kenny Burrell (guitar) and Donald Bailey (drums). Jazz organ enthusiasts (like me) will love this album with its soulful presence and mindful "jazziness".
The SACD does start a bit soft and airy but this becomes less noticeable as the album plays on and get louder. I suspect Jimmy wanted the album to start softer and then grow in texture and volume. I found myself having to turn up the volume on track one at the start and then turn down a lot by the end of the song. I don't recall my old Redbook CD having this characteristic but knowing Hoffman I am sure he didn't alter anything luckily from the original !
Overall another winner from AP and a great addition to my SACD collection .....
