Review by Luukas May 24, 2014 (2 of 5 found this review helpful)
Well, this is very interesting re-release of old classic recordings of Shostakovich's concertos. My own favorites are First Violin Concerto and Second Piano Concerto and these old performances captured these works authentics feelings.
David Oistrakh performs First Violin Concerto very effectively and vividly. The recording sound is remastered very well, and Jevgeni Mravinsky conducts also brilliantly. This is live recording, and Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra gives its best. First movement's dreamy and mysteriously feelings are performed beautifully: Oistrakh's violin's tone is loudly and expressive. Second movement, demonic and virtuosity scherzo sounds very exciting. Third movement's peaceful and beautiful passacaglia is good, and Oistrakh plays composer's difficult cadenza with fire. The fourth movement is brilliant.
The other concertos are also very good, but Violin Concerto's performance is the best. Unfortunately, there isn't hybrid multi-channel mix, only two-channel stereo. Music sounds only from left and right main speakers. Still, SACD's high resolution sound brings these performances very closely, and booklet and disc are packaged in strong jewel case. I like this, but there are better multi-channel releases of these works.
