Brahms: Symphonies Nos. 1 & 4 - Bosch        (10 of 11 found this review helpful)
  March 14, 2007

Recording: Eurogress, Aachen. Dec 2006. This disc features the 1st and 4th Symphonies of Brahms. I've probably listened to 40-50 performances of these works and own many copies on disc, but I haven't heard anything lately that sounds like these recordings. A general description might be that these ... more
Brahms: Symphony No. 2, Tragic Overture - Hans Vonk          (5 of 5 found this review helpful)
  September 27, 2006

The liner notes to other Pentatone Brahms/Vonk SACD state that, after being offered the opportunity to choose any work to record, Hans Vonk indicated that he now felt mature enough as a conductor (at 60+ years of age!) to tackle a complete cycle of the Brahms symphonies. Such a self-effacing ... more
Bruckner: Symphony No. 5 - Bosch        (11 of 12 found this review helpful)

There are relatively few performances of Bruckner symphonies on SACD, and probably even fewer of this symphony, a tough nut to pull-off in a performance. Marcus Bosch and his Aachen forces put on a performance that most Brucknerians will want to hear and that I greatly enjoyed. The performance ... more
Vaughan Williams: Orchestral Works - Judd        (3 of 3 found this review helpful)

This disc contains four well-known RVW works - the Tallis and Greensleeves Fantasias, Norfolk Rhapsody No. 1, and In The Fen Country, and one rarely heard work - the Concerto Grosso. Presumably recorded in 24-bit PCM, the venue was the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington, New Zealand. I listened ... more
Tchaikovsky, Korngold: Violin Concerto - Mutter        (3 of 8 found this review helpful)
  December 30, 2005

This is a great performance of Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto by an all-star cast - Mutter, Previn and VPO. To top it all off, DG (at least this once!) has done an excellent job capturing the sonic glories of this violinist, the orchestral accompaniment, and the fabled Musikvereinsaal where the ... more

Has anyone else listened to this disc? I've probably listened to 40-50 performances of these works and own many copies on disc, but I haven't heard anything lately that sounds like these recordings. My general description would be that these performances sound like a cross between Charles Mackerras' and Nikolaus Harnoncourt's approach to the ... more

Mozart: Violin Concertos/Manze/English Concert (dark horse winner in this repertoire in 2006, better than the much-touted Fischer/Kreizberg).
